Chennai: Drone startup Garuda Aerospace has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Himachal Futuristic Communications Limited (HFCL) at Aero India 2025. This strategic partnership aims to enhance artificial intelligence-driven unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology, reinforcing the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative by boosting India’s self-reliance in drone manufacturing.
Expanding Drone Applications
The collaboration will allow both companies to extend the use of drones across various sectors, including defence, agriculture, surveillance, industrial inspection, disaster response, and logistics. HFCL will focus on developing and supplying advanced payloads such as electro-optical/infrared sensors, LiDAR, and AI-powered communication systems. Garuda Aerospace will integrate these technologies into its drone platforms, ensuring seamless deployment for commercial and defence operations.
Enhancing AI-Enabled Drone Capabilities
Garuda Aerospace drones will feature AI-driven capabilities for a wide range of applications. In disaster management, thermal imaging drones will support search, rescue, and damage assessment efforts. High-resolution cameras will facilitate industrial inspections, while 5G-enabled networks will enhance connectivity for smart city surveillance. AI-powered cargo drones will be deployed to optimize logistics and urban mobility. Real-time monitoring and analytics will also support government programs like Namo Drone Didi and Viksit Bharat, providing timely assistance to farmers.
Focus on Research and Innovation
The two companies will jointly research AI, machine learning, and sensor fusion technologies. Their goal is to develop next-generation drones with longer flight times, greater autonomy, and the ability to operate in coordinated swarms. This initiative will contribute to advancing India’s indigenous drone capabilities while expanding access to global markets.

Agnishwar Jayaprakash, founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Garuda Aerospace, emphasized that the partnership gives the company a significant competitive edge by enabling the development of advanced drone solutions. He stated that the integration of high-performance payload technology will benefit various sectors, reduce reliance on foreign suppliers, and strengthen the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
Sampathkumaran S T, executive president (defence business) at HFCL, highlighted the synergy between the two companies, stating that their combined technological expertise will contribute to national security, economic development, and humanitarian efforts. He added that this partnership aligns with the ‘Make in India’ initiative and will have a substantial global impact.
The agreement is expected to accelerate large-scale drone deployment, expand domestic manufacturing, and open new opportunities for Indian drones in international markets. By leveraging AI and advanced technology, Garuda Aerospace and HFCL aim to transform the UAV industry while strengthening India’s position as a leader in drone innovation.
