PhonePe Introduces Device Tokenization for Card Payments-Here’s What It Means

New Delhi: PhonePe has rolled out device tokenization for credit and debit card transactions, aiming to enhance payment security and streamline digital transactions. Initially available for Visa cards, the feature will allow users to tokenize their cards on the PhonePe app and use them for various transactions without repeatedly entering card details.

What Is Device Tokenization?

Device tokenization replaces sensitive card details with a unique digital identifier or “token,” reducing the risk of fraud. This ensures that merchants and payment platforms do not store actual card data, making digital transactions more secure.

Key Benefits for Consumers

With this feature, PhonePe users will no longer need to save their card details on multiple platforms. The key advantages include:

  • Enhanced Security: Tokenized cards are linked to specific devices, minimizing fraud risks from data breaches or stolen card information.
  • Faster Transactions: Users can complete payments without entering CVV codes for every transaction, reducing checkout time.
  • Improved Transaction Success Rate: Eliminating manual entry errors and card declines due to incorrect details will lead to fewer transaction failures.
Impact on Merchants

For businesses using PhonePe’s payment gateway, the introduction of tokenization could result in:

  • Higher Conversion Rates: A frictionless checkout experience may lead to more successful transactions.
  • Reduced Fraud Risk: Tokenized payments add an extra layer of security, reducing the chances of chargebacks and unauthorized transactions.
  • Wider Adoption: As more users shift to tokenized payments, merchants can benefit from increased customer retention.
Future Expansion Plans

Rahul Chari, Co-founder & CTO of PhonePe, stated that the company plans to expand the service to additional card networks and extend the feature to all merchants using PhonePe’s payment gateway. The move aligns with broader industry efforts to strengthen digital payment security and boost user confidence in online transactions. With digital payments on the rise, PhonePe’s tokenization initiative marks a step toward reducing fraud risks while making transactions smoother for users and merchants alike.
