Meta Confirms 8,000 Job Cuts as Internal Memo Reveals Hiring Freeze and AI Push

New Delhi, Apr 24, (CXO Media): Meta Platforms has confirmed plans to lay off about 8,000 employees, roughly 10 per cent of its global workforce, according to an internal memo shared with staff.

Layoffs confirmed after weeks of speculation

The announcement follows weeks of speculation about workforce reductions at the company led by Mark Zuckerberg. The memo, sent by Chief People Officer Janelle Gale and first reported by Bloomberg, stated that the layoffs are scheduled for May 20. Employees affected will receive notifications via their work and personal email accounts on that date.
The company also confirmed that around 6,000 previously planned roles will remain unfilled, signalling a broader hiring slowdown alongside the workforce reduction.

Shift in spending priorities

The memo indicated that the job cuts form part of a broader effort to improve operational efficiency and redirect resources towards strategic investments. While specific areas were not detailed, the company has significantly increased spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure in recent years.
The layoffs place Meta among several major technology firms, including Microsoft, Amazon, and Oracle, that have reduced workforce numbers while scaling investments in artificial intelligence and automation technologies.
Reports also indicate that this may not be the only round of job cuts. Earlier workforce reductions included about 700 roles across teams such as the company’s Reality Labs division, which focuses on metaverse-related products.

Severance and support measures outlined

According to the memo, affected employees in the United States will receive severance packages that include 16 weeks of base pay, along with an additional two weeks of pay for each year of service. The company will also cover healthcare costs for US-based employees and their families for up to 18 months. Support packages for employees in other countries will vary depending on local regulations and timelines.

The layoffs reflect a wider restructuring effort as the company adjusts its workforce strategy while increasing investments in emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence.
