New Delhi: Microsoft is in talks to supply custom AI chips to Anthropic. Microsoft is discussing a potential deal with AI startup Anthropic to use its in-house Maia AI processors, as the company looks to expand computing capacity for its fast-growing AI services. The discussions are centred on Microsoft’s Maia chips, though no final agreement has been signed yet.
Microsoft’s AI Chip Push
A partnership with Anthropic could become a key test for Microsoft’s Maia chip ambitions. The company introduced its second-generation Maia 200 processor earlier this year and said it delivers better cost efficiency compared to existing hardware in its data centres. Microsoft has also confirmed that the chip will support OpenAI’s GPT-5.2 model.
The talks are significant because Microsoft has been trying to reduce dependence on Nvidia by developing its own AI hardware. However, unlike Amazon and Google, Microsoft entered the custom chip market later and is still scaling deployment.
Anthropic Expands Hardware Partnerships
Anthropic has been widening its infrastructure network to meet rising AI demand. The company already works with Amazon Web Services on Trainium chips and also uses Google’s tensor processing units. A Microsoft agreement would add another major technology partner as competition in the AI chip market intensifies.
For Microsoft, landing Anthropic as a customer could help strengthen Azure’s position in the race for enterprise AI infrastructure.
