OpenAI to Open New Office in New Delhi, Strengthening AI Presence in India

OpenAI, Samsung Sign Pact to Build AI Data Centre Infrastructure

New Delhi: OpenAI, the artificial intelligence company and creator of ChatGPT, has announced plans to establish its first office in New Delhi.

The move reflects the company’s support for the government’s IndiaAI Mission and signals its commitment to ‘build AI for India, with India.’

India: Second-largest market for ChatGPT

India has become OpenAI’s second-largest and one of its fastest-growing markets after the United States. Over the past year, ChatGPT users in India have increased more than fourfold, with the country also hosting the largest number of students using the platform worldwide.

According to OpenAI, opening an office in New Delhi and hiring a local team marks an important first step toward expanding its presence in the country. The company has already established a legal entity in India and will soon reveal more details about the office and its activities.

Significance of the initiative

Sam Altman, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of OpenAI, noted that India possesses all the elements needed to emerge as a global leader in artificial intelligence, including a strong developer ecosystem, vast technical talent, and government backing through the IndiaAI Mission. He emphasized that building a local team in India will make advanced AI more accessible nationwide.

Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said OpenAI’s entry into India reflects the country’s growing leadership in AI adoption and digital innovation. He highlighted that India’s investments in digital infrastructure, AI talent, and enterprise-scale solutions position it to drive the next wave of AI-led transformation.

Education and developer engagements planned

Later this month, OpenAI will host its first-ever Education Summit in India. It also plans to organize its first Developer Day in the country later this year, aimed at supporting developers, startups, and enterprises in building AI-powered solutions.
