Microsoft Pilots Copilot 3D to Convert Images into 3D Models

Microsoft Confirms 20 million Paid Copilot Users as Large Enterprises Drive Adoption

New Delhi: Microsoft has introduced Copilot 3D, an AI-based tool designed to convert standard 2D images into 3D models without requiring prior modelling expertise. The feature, currently in an experimental phase, is available for free to a limited group of users through Copilot Labs and does not require a paid subscription.

Users can upload images of up to 10MB, which the system transforms into print-ready and render-ready 3D assets. These models can be integrated into workflows across gaming, animation, 3D printing, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and metaverse-related applications.

According to Microsoft, the tool aims to reduce the complexity traditionally associated with 3D asset creation. By eliminating the need for specialised software skills, Copilot 3D could support rapid prototyping, concept testing, and visual exploration for both professional and educational purposes.

The launch places Microsoft alongside other technology companies investing in AI-driven 3D model generation. Tencent and Meta released similar tools in 2024, while Apple researchers introduced Matrix3D, an open-source model, earlier this year.

Industry observers note that such developments reflect a broader shift toward democratising 3D content creation. However, questions remain about the consistency, precision, and scalability of AI-generated models, especially for high-end professional use. Microsoft has not confirmed a timeline for wider availability, indicating that feedback from the current test phase will inform future deployment plans.
