Gujarat: Reliance Industries and DP World have introduced a rail-based logistics solution to transport petrochemical products, reducing reliance on road transport and cutting carbon emissions. The shift streamlines the supply chain between Reliance’s Jamnagar plant in Gujarat, DP World’s inland container depot (ICD) in Ahmedabad, and the port of Mundra.
Rail Replaces Road for Jamnagar-Mundra Route
Previously, petrochemical shipments between Jamnagar and Mundra traveled about 700 km by road. With the new logistics model, the Ahmedabad-Jamnagar-Mundra route is now served by rail, addressing environmental and operational challenges linked to long-haul trucking.
The rail solution enables the movement of up to 1,260 tonnes of cargo in one trip, consolidating 45 containers into a single rail movement. This shift eliminates the need for multiple trucks and drivers, improving supply chain efficiency while reducing emissions.
Impact on Logistics and Sustainability
By eliminating 700 km of road transport per container, the rail service significantly lowers Reliance’s carbon footprint. The initiative aligns with Reliance’s sustainability targets and India’s broader push toward greener logistics.
Ganesh Raj, Global COO of DP World Marine Services, stated that the move enhances operational efficiency and supports timely exports. Ravikumar Nair, Head of Supply Chain Management at Reliance’s petrochemicals division, emphasized that the transition to rail has reduced road congestion and improved logistics efficiency.
The move reflects a growing trend in the Indian logistics sector, where companies are seeking rail and multimodal solutions to cut emissions and improve supply chain resilience.
