Mumbai: JSW Infrastructure has announced that it has received a Letter of Award (LoA) from the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority for a Rs 740 crore port development project aimed at significantly boosting container handling capabilities at Netaji Subhas Dock in Kolkata.

The project includes the reconstruction of berth 8 and the mechanization of berth 7, and has been awarded on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) basis under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. It carries a 30-year concession period, aligning with JSW Infrastructure’s broader strategy to expand its terminal footprint as part of the government’s port privatization drive.

With a planned capital expenditure of Rs 740 crore and a two-year construction timeline, the company stated that it would also commence partial operations during the construction phase, capitalizing on Kolkata’s stable cargo demand. Once completed, the project is expected to significantly enhance operational efficiency and overall container handling capacity.

According to JSW Infrastructure, this project represents a major step in its strategy to diversify its cargo portfolio, particularly by deepening its presence in the container segment. The new terminal will further strengthen JSW’s container operations on both the eastern and western coasts of India.

On the west coast, JSW currently operates the New Mangalore Container Terminal, which is being expanded from 0.2 million TEUs to 0.35 million TEUs. With the new Kolkata addition, the company’s total container handling capacity will approach 1 million TEUs, reinforcing its position as a key player in India’s maritime logistics sector.
