Google Launches New AI Tools to Boost India’s Agriculture and Cultural Representation in AI Models

Bengaluru: Google has unveiled a series of new open-source AI innovations and initiatives designed to transform India’s agriculture sector and enhance the cultural and linguistic sensitivity of AI models. 

The announcements include the launch of the Agricultural Monitoring and Event Detection (AMED) API and the extension of its ‘Amplify Initiative’ to India in collaboration with IIT-Kharagpur.

These developments underscore Google’s long-term commitment to applying AI for real-world impact, supporting IAI fondia’s ambitious push towards a future powered by responsible and inclusive AI.

Introduction of AMED API for Data-Driven Agriculture

One of the key announcements is the Agricultural Monitoring and Event Detection (AMED) API, developed by Google DeepMind and the Google Partnerships Innovation team. Building on last year’s Agricultural Landscape Understanding (ALU) API, AMED leverages satellite imagery, crop labels, and machine learning to provide detailed insights on crops and agricultural activities across India.

The AMED API delivers field-level data, including crop type, field size, sowing and harvesting dates, and historical agricultural activity from the past three years. Refreshed every two weeks, this API offers a near real-time window into field-level changes, empowering ecosystem players, such as agritech startups, government agencies, and research institutions, to build AI-enabled solutions that improve crop management, predict harvest volumes, and address crop-specific needs like soil and water conditions.

Combined with the ALU API, which maps field boundaries, water bodies, and vegetation, AMED has been designed to help create data-driven, resilient, and productive agricultural practices across the country.

Expansion of ‘Amplify Initiative’ 

Google is also extending its ‘Amplify Initiative’ to India. The initiative focuses on building high-quality, structured, and localized datasets to help AI models better understand India’s rich linguistic and cultural diversity. 

Google is collaborating with IIT-Kharagpur to collect and annotate data in multiple Indic languages on topics like healthcare, safety, and community well-being.

The Amplify Initiative follows a community-centric, expert-vetted approach to data collection, ensuring that potential biases are minimized and ethical standards are upheld. It aims to bridge critical knowledge gaps within Large Language Models (LLMs) and ensure AI applications are more relatable and useful for Indian users.

Amplify was earlier piloted in Sub-Saharan Africa, where it produced annotated datasets in seven African languages with input from 155 local experts.

Looking Ahead

With initiatives like AMED and Amplify, Google is reinforcing its ecosystem-first and open-source approach to AI development in India. By integrating cultural and agricultural intelligence into global AI systems, Google aims to ensure that technological progress is inclusive, impactful, and locally relevant.
