Tata Motors Appoints Shailesh Chandra as New MD & CEO from October 1

New Delhi: Tata Motors has announced a major leadership reshuffle as it prepares to separate its commercial vehicle division into a new listed entity, TML Commercial Vehicles Limited (TMLCV), from October 1, 2025. The company said Shailesh Chandra, currently Joint Managing Director of its passenger vehicles and electric mobility units, will take over as managing director and chief executive officer of Tata Motors for a three-year term starting October 1.

Chandra, who joined Tata Motors in 1995 as a production manager, has held several leadership positions across manufacturing, vendor development, corporate strategy, and transformation. He played a central role in shaping the company’s passenger vehicle strategy and driving its shift toward electric mobility. In recent years, he has been at the forefront of Tata’s passenger vehicle revival and the expansion of its EV portfolio, which now dominates India’s nascent electric car market.

The reshuffle will also see Girish Wagh, currently executive director at Tata Motors, move as MD & CEO of the newly formed TMLCV. Meanwhile, PB Balaji, the group CFO, will step down in November to become CEO of Jaguar Land Rover Automotive Plc in the UK, while continuing as a non-executive director on the boards of Tata Motors and TMLCV.

Chandra holds a mechanical engineering degree from Banaras Hindu University and an executive MBA from SP Jain Institute of Management and Research, Mumbai. Alongside his role at Tata Motors, he serves on the boards of Tata Technologies, Fiat India Automobiles, Trilix Srl in Italy, and Tata Motors Design Tech Centre in the UK.

The leadership changes reflect Tata Motors’ effort to sharpen its focus on passenger vehicles and electric mobility while giving commercial vehicles a dedicated growth path under a separate listed entity.
