Google Narrows “Work From Anywhere” Option as Hybrid Rules Get Stricter

New Delhi: Google has tightened its “Work From Anywhere” (WFA) policy, limiting one of its last remaining flexible work benefits as it reinforces office attendance across teams. The company now counts any use of WFA, even a single day as a full week from the employee’s annual four-week entitlement, reducing the program’s original flexibility.

Introduced during the pandemic, the WFA policy allowed employees to work remotely from any location for up to four weeks a year. The initiative complemented Google’s hybrid model, which requires staff to be in the office three days a week. However, under the revised rules, geographical restrictions now prohibit working from other Google offices in different states or countries, citing legal and tax compliance concerns.

Employees have expressed frustration internally, arguing that the new system undermines the intent of the policy. During a recent all-hands meeting, many questioned why a single remote day counts as a full week. Addressing these concerns, John Casey, Google’s vice president of performance and rewards, said the policy “was always meant to be taken in week-long increments” and was designed for temporary work from alternate locations, not as an extension of hybrid work.

The move comes as Google intensifies efforts to ensure compliance with its hybrid work model. Over the past year, the company has linked office attendance to performance evaluations and warned that repeated noncompliance could impact employment status.

The policy shift reflects a broader trend among major tech firms recalibrating post-pandemic flexibility. For Google employees, the change signals a decisive shift toward structure and accountability, reinforcing that the freedom to “work from anywhere” is no longer a given in Silicon Valley’s evolving workplace culture.
