New Delhi: India has introduced its first regulatory-approved eye-tracking system for autism detection, with Butterfly Learnings launching Get SET Early. The tool is designed to identify Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in children as young as 12 to 24 months, marking a shift from conventional approaches that often delay diagnosis until the age of four or five.
Unlike traditional screening methods based on subjective assessments, the new system provides an objective, data-driven evaluation. Developed by Dr. Karen Pierce, Co-Director of the Autism Center of Excellence at the University of California, San Diego, Get SET Early tracks children’s eye movements and social attention patterns to generate an autism risk score along with an indication of symptom severity. Results are delivered in minutes, allowing clinicians and parents to consider intervention strategies much earlier.
The prevalence of autism in India is estimated at around one in 68 children, highlighting the need for early detection and structured support. Experts suggest that timely identification enables more effective therapies and developmental interventions, improving long-term outcomes for children with ASD.
Butterfly Learnings has announced plans to deploy the tool across pediatric clinics, schools, and therapy centers, with the aim of establishing a nationwide early autism screening network. Alongside this, the company continues to provide therapy services and inclusive education programs for children with developmental needs. The introduction of eye-tracking technology represents a significant move toward evidence-based, technology-enabled approaches in India’s autism care ecosystem.
