New Delhi: Global communications platform Truecaller has introduced a new feature called Family Protection in India to help households guard against increasingly sophisticated online scams.
The launch comes as cyber frauds such as impersonation calls, so-called “digital arrests,” and AI-based voice cloning continue to pose growing risks to individuals and families.
The feature is designed to extend protection beyond individual users by enabling families to collectively manage communication security. Within a household, a designated member, often the most digitally aware individual, can act as an administrator to oversee safety settings for the group.
The system allows this person to receive instant alerts about potential fraud calls and remotely disconnect suspicious calls for other members when necessary.
Family Protection also offers shared block lists, adjustable security controls and a central dashboard that allows administrators to monitor safety settings across devices.
The tool works across both Android and iOS platforms and is being made available free of charge, allowing families to begin using the protection features without a subscription.
According to Rishit Jhunjhunwala, the evolving nature of scams means identifying a caller alone is no longer sufficient.
He noted that modern fraud attempts often rely on emotional manipulation, making it necessary to extend safeguards to the entire household rather than focusing only on individual users.
While the basic Family Protection feature is free, users can also opt for a Premium Family Plan to access additional advanced security capabilities.
The company emphasised that the system has been designed to maintain privacy within families, meaning members cannot view each other’s call records, messages or personal information.
The rollout in India follows the feature’s introduction in several international markets, including Sweden, Chile, Malaysia and Kenya, as the company expands efforts to combat digital fraud through technology-driven safeguards.
