In an exclusive conversation with CXO Media and APAC Media, Gautam Rege, Co-founder and Managing Director, Josh Software, traces the evolution of AI and the role played by Josh in its practical application.
Josh Software has carved a niche in building scalable technology solutions. What was the core vision behind starting the company, and how has that evolved over the years?
My co-founder, Sethu and I started Josh Software in 2007 as two programmers who shared a love for clean code and caffeine. That’s also how we got our name — Josh means enthusiasm and passion in Hindi, which perfectly captures our mindset. What began as a duo writing lines of Ruby code has now scaled into a team of about 300 developers, building enterprise solutions in Banking, Insurance, and FinTech. We’ve always believed in open-source technologies and continue using new tools and frameworks that can drive security, scale, and performance for our clients. With India’s Fintech boom, it was a no-brainer for us to lean in and help shape its tech backbone. We work with not only one of the largest banks in India but also India’s largest Payments Ecosystem.
With the rapid evolution of AI and machine learning, how is Josh Software integrating these technologies into its offerings or internal workflows?
At Josh, we believe AI isn’t about replacing humans — it’s about empowering them. Our developers now write better code, faster, thanks to tools like GitHub Copilot and Cursor. Code reviews are smoother and routine tasks are automated. We save hours that can be better spent solving actual problems. That said, we’re very mindful of how we use AI. We’ve implemented company-wide safeguards to ensure our customers’ source code remains secure and IP stays protected. We love experimenting, but we don’t play fast and loose when it comes to privacy.
What are some of the most promising use cases of AI you’re seeing across industries, and how is Josh Software positioning itself to support these transformations?
AI is becoming an everyday companion — from tracking your health to approving your loans. In Healthtech, integrations like Google Health offer smarter, consent-based insights to improve well-being. In Fintech, AI helps verify borrowers, analyse risk, and streamline lending. Insurance is seeing faster, more accurate claims processing, and we’re not far from hyper-personalised health policies based on individual data.
At Josh, we’re partnering with leading Fintech firms to turn these possibilities into real products, making financial services faster, safer, and more personalised.
As a tech leader, what are the key challenges you face while balancing innovation with practical implementation, especially when dealing with cutting-edge technologies like generative AI or real-time data analytics?
One word: data.
Specifically, how it’s used and how it’s protected. The blurred lines around what data can and can’t be used for training AI models are a minefield. While regulations are catching up, it’s still very much the Wild West. Josh focuses on putting product integrity first. Whether it’s complying with GDPR or implementing enterprise-grade security protocols, we ensure innovation never comes at the cost of privacy.
How do you approach ethical considerations and data privacy when building AI-powered solutions, especially for enterprise clients?
The biggest ethical landmine in AI? Bias.
Whether it’s gender, race, or geography, pre-trained models often reflect the prejudices of their training data. So, we’re picky about the models we use. If we’re working with AI services, we insist on evaluating their biases — or at the very least, flagging them. Enterprise clients, especially, are fiercely protective of their data. Which means open-source, on-premises AI solutions often become the default choice, even if it means sacrificing a bit of accuracy.
It’s not perfect, but at least the model’s flaws are yours to fix.
How does Josh Software foster a culture of continuous learning and innovation within your tech teams to stay ahead of the curve in an AI-driven world?
At Josh, learning isn’t optional — it’s woven into our DNA. Every team member is expected to pick up a new tool, language, or skill every year. We host regular workshops, encourage hackathons, and even reward experimentation (yes, even if it breaks once in a while). We’re not always on target, but we are always moving forward. And when someone discovers a more efficient way to do something, we celebrate it and roll it out. That’s how you stay relevant in a world where yesterday’s cutting-edge becomes today’s norm.
What advice would you give to aspiring tech entrepreneurs looking to build sustainable, impact-driven companies in today’s fast-changing ecosystem?
Adaptability is the only superpower you need. Ideas are cheap, and with AI, execution is getting cheaper too. But great companies? They’re built on the ability to pivot, persist, and think five steps ahead. Don’t just chase trends — understand them. Build a strong network. Stay curious. Use AI, but don’t become lazy. Expertise will always matter. The only thing AI won’t replace is the ability to think like a human and build for other humans.
