Google’s Global Business Unit Slashes Approx 200 Employees

Google reportedly lays off around 200 employees in its global business unit amidst a broader trend of tech companies shifting focus to AI and data centres.

New Delhi: Google laid off roughly 200 employees in its global business unit, which handles partnerships and sales, on 6 May, according to reports.

It is important to highlight that large tech companies have been reducing their investments in other areas while shifting funds to data centres and AI development.

The company stated that it was making a small number of changes across teams “to drive greater collaboration and expand our ability to quickly and effectively serve our customers.”

Google laid off hundreds of workers in its platforms and devices division, which includes the Chrome browser, Pixel phones and Android platform, among other apps, according to reports published last month.

Alphabet, the parent company of Google, disclosed intentions to lay off 12,000 employees, or 6% of its global workforce, in January 2023. As of 31 December 2024, it employed 183,323 people, according to a February filing.

Approximately 5% of Facebook’s “lowest performers” were let go in January this year, along with other significant layoffs, while machine learning engineers were being hired more quickly.

In September last year, Microsoft also laid off 650 employees from its Xbox division. According to media estimates, Apple cut over 100 positions in its digital services area last year, while Amazon fired off workers in a number of departments, including communications.
