Kolkata: Jupiter Wagons Ltd. has secured a Rs 242.41 crore contract from GATX India to manufacture and supply 583 specialised wagons tailored for diverse freight requirements, including containerised cargo, bulk commodities, and passenger vehicles.
Contract Scope
The order includes BLSS, ACT2, BOXNHL, and BVCM wagon types:
BLSS (Container Carrier Wagon): Built for ISO containers, offering higher axle load capacity and improved payload efficiency for intermodal logistics.
ACT2 (Bi-level SUV Carrier): Designed for finished automobile transport, accommodating up to 10 SUVs per wagon with minimal handling and faster loading.
BOXNHL (High-Capacity Open Wagon): Used for bulk commodities such as coal and iron ore, with open-top design, tippler unloading capability, and payload capacity exceeding 70 tonnes.
Financial Performance
The announcement follows Jupiter Wagons’ strong Q1 FY26 results. The company reported a 46% year-on-year rise in net profit to Rs 91.9 crore. Revenue increased 16.8% to Rs 879.9 crore, while EBITDA rose 41.4% to Rs 136.7 crore. Operating margins improved to 15.5% from 12.9% in the previous year.
Industry Outlook
The deal reflects rising demand for specialised rolling stock in India’s freight sector, driven by infrastructure growth, increased intermodal transport, and expanding automobile logistics. The order is expected to bolster Jupiter Wagons’ production pipeline and support the rail sector’s shift towards higher-capacity, purpose-built freight solutions.
