OpenAI Appoints Raghav Gupta as Head of Education for India and Asia Pacific

New Delhi: OpenAI has named Raghav Gupta as Head of Education for India and the Asia Pacific region, underscoring its growing focus on integrating artificial intelligence into education systems across the region. India has emerged as one of the largest user bases for ChatGPT, with students relying on it for exam preparation, assignments, and skill development. The company’s decision to appoint him reflects an effort to deepen collaboration with educators, institutions, and policymakers to ensure AI tools address the specific needs of learners and teachers.

He brings over 25 years of experience in building and scaling technology-led businesses in education, travel, and consumer services. He spent eight years at Coursera, where he expanded the Asia-Pacific learner base from 2 million to more than 55 million, grew enterprise customers from 10 to over 1,000, and oversaw revenue growth at a CAGR of more than 60 percent. Prior to that, he launched and built BlaBlaCar in India, which today has a membership of over 20 million. His earlier career included 14 years in management consulting with Booz & Co. and KSA Technopak, equipping him with expertise in strategy and structured execution.

Beyond corporate roles, he has contributed to policy discussions through FICCI, CII, and NITI Aayog. His appointment comes as debates intensify on the role of AI in classrooms, raising questions on balancing access to technology with responsible use. OpenAI’s decision to bring in an experienced leader suggests a more structured approach to shaping the use of AI in education across India and the wider Asia Pacific region.
