Bangalore: L&T Semiconductor Technologies (LTSCT), a subsidiary of Larsen & Toubro, and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish the country’s first 2D Innovation Hub. The facility will focus on advancing semiconductor and quantum technologies, with an emphasis on two-dimensional (2D) materials.
The proposed hub will concentrate on wafer-scale fabrication, device prototyping, and translational research in 2D semiconductors, a field increasingly relevant to next-generation electronics and quantum applications. The collaboration is still subject to government approval but is expected to serve as a national centre for research, skill development, and industry integration.
According to the agreement, IISc will lead the development of platform technologies, fabrication facilities, and shared research infrastructure, while also training talent in the field. LTSCT will contribute manpower, facilities, and infrastructure support, alongside research fellowships, lab access, and joint PhD supervision. The company, which has R&D centres in Bengaluru, Delhi, and Chennai, as well as international units in Austin, Munich, and Tokyo, plans to leverage its global networks to expand the hub’s scope.
The National 2D Innovation Hub aims to equip India with intellectual property, manufacturing capacity, and skilled researchers, aligning with the country’s efforts to strengthen its semiconductor ecosystem. By combining industrial expertise with academic research, the initiative seeks to accelerate innovation in emerging semiconductor technologies.
