New Delhi: OpenAI will launch a teen-focused version of ChatGPT by the end of September 2025, adding new parental controls and content filters as regulators step up scrutiny over how AI affects young users.
The move comes as the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) investigates whether AI chatbots contribute to risks around mental health, misinformation, and unsafe online behavior among children and adolescents. The inquiry reflects growing concerns about how widely used AI tools shape emotional well-being and digital interactions for minors.
OpenAI said the new version of ChatGPT will automatically direct teenagers to a safer experience whenever age is confirmed or unclear. If user data does not specify age, the system will default to the teen-friendly model. The company is also developing algorithms to predict user age more accurately, aiming to prevent underage users from accessing content not meant for them.
Key safeguards include blocking sexual or graphic material and setting up response mechanisms for situations that may involve mental health crises. In severe cases, the platform may escalate matters to professionals or relevant authorities. The announcement follows lawsuits and public criticism linked to instances where AI tools were associated with sensitive situations involving teenagers.
OpenAI’s initiative reflects a wider debate on the ethical responsibilities of AI developers and the role of technology companies in safeguarding digital spaces for youth. With regulators pressing for stronger accountability, the rollout of ChatGPT for Teens signals an industry attempt to balance innovation with child protection and data privacy.
By creating a restricted environment for adolescents, OpenAI positions itself within ongoing discussions on responsible AI adoption and the risks of deploying advanced chatbots to younger audiences. The development is expected to inform both policy and industry practices as governments and watchdogs worldwide evaluate the impact of generative AI on vulnerable groups.
