Google Raises Andhra Pradesh Data Center Investment to Over $15 Billion

Amaravati: Google will expand its planned data center investment in Andhra Pradesh to more than $15 billion, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu confirmed. The decision marks one of the largest digital infrastructure commitments announced in the state and signals rising competition among global technology firms to strengthen their India operations.

According to the state government, the proposal positions Andhra Pradesh as a potential hub for large-scale data and cloud infrastructure. Officials noted that the development could support long-term capacity for data storage, cloud computing, and AI workloads as India’s digital usage continues to grow. The project also aligns with the central government’s emphasis on data localisation and expanding domestic digital infrastructure.

Nara Lokesh, Minister for IT, Electronics and Communication, said the agreement followed nearly 13 months of negotiations and technical planning. He pointed out that the discussions focused on meeting Google’s infrastructure, policy, and regulatory benchmarks, indicating the scale and complexity involved in securing such an investment.

While the project is expected to support jobs and local industry participation, officials maintained that the broader significance lies in establishing high-capacity digital infrastructure in the state. The planned facility is expected to cater to rising demands from Indian users and enterprises that increasingly rely on cloud platforms, AI applications, and real-time data processing.

The investment also reflects a wider shift in how global technology companies approach India, with states competing to attract cloud and semiconductor projects. For Andhra Pradesh, the project could influence future digital infrastructure planning and attract ancillary technology investments.

Google has not released detailed timelines or technical specifications for the data center yet. However, the state government expects the project to move into the implementation phase once regulatory and land-related processes conclude.
