Flipkart Starts Biometric Card Payments With Axis Bank, Moves Beyond OTP-Based Verification

Flipkart Starts Biometric Card Payments With Axis Bank, Moves Beyond OTP-Based Verification

New Delhi, 28 Apr, (CXO Media): Flipkart has started rolling out biometric authentication for card payments, allowing select users to approve transactions using fingerprints or facial recognition instead of OTPs.

The feature has been introduced in partnership with Axis Bank and PayU and is currently available for Axis Bank cardholders using supported Android and iOS devices on Flipkart. With this system, users can confirm payments directly on their phones without relying on SMS-based OTPs, which are often delayed or fail to arrive.

Under the arrangement, PayU manages the payment-side infrastructure, while Axis Bank handles authentication through Wibmo, a PayU-owned platform. The companies said the system uses device binding and issuer-level verification to link the transaction to a specific user device.

Cases involving SIM-swap fraud and OTP interception have raised concerns across the digital payments ecosystem. The Reserve Bank of India, through its Authentication Mechanisms for Digital Payment Transactions Directions, 2025, has encouraged banks and payment providers to adopt stronger authentication tools, including biometric-based and risk-based methods, for online payments.

The feature is being introduced in phases, starting with Axis Bank card users on Flipkart, with wider expansion expected over time as more devices and users are added.
