Air India Adds Apple AirTag Tracking to Baggage System, Raises Data-Sharing Questions

New Delhi: Air India has enabled the integration of Apple AirTag with its baggage-tracking system, becoming the first airline in Asia to support this feature. The move, aimed at improving tracking and recovery of lost luggage, is expected to benefit passengers using Apple devices such as iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks.

The national carrier handles over 100 million pieces of baggage annually. While Air India claims that more than 99.6 per cent of luggage arrives with its passengers, the remaining 0.4 per cent affected by issues like flight misconnections or airport system failures, could potentially be located faster using the AirTag feature.

What the Integration Offers

The integration is available through Air India’s mobile app and website. Passengers can monitor their baggage in real time after check-in, provided they’ve added their flight to the “My Trips” section of the app or scanned the baggage receipt barcode.

If a bag goes missing, passengers using AirTag can report it at the airline’s baggage counter at the destination airport. A Property Irregularity Report (PIR) will be filed by Air India staff, after which the passenger must share the AirTag’s location through Apple’s ‘Find My’ app.

The location link is then submitted either via Air India’s app or website under the “Lost and Found – Check-in Baggage” section. This link is used by Air India’s authorised teams to track and recover the baggage if it is still within airport premises. An acknowledgment email with a tracking link is sent to the passenger.
