AI Now Writes Over 30% of Google’s New Code as Company Deepens Internal Use

New Delhi: Google has confirmed that artificial intelligence now generates over 30% of its new code, up from 25% in October 2024, as the company pushes deeper into internal adoption of generative AI tools. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai revealed the figure during the Q1 2025 earnings call on April 24, in response to a query on the company’s productivity gains through AI.

AI’s Expanding Role in Google’s Core Operations

Pichai noted that Google is moving beyond simple coding suggestions and is now deploying more advanced, agentic workflows to enhance developer experiences. “We are working on deeper flows with the newer models,” he said, indicating a long-term plan to embed AI into product development processes.

Google’s generative AI tools, such as Gemini, are being used by its internal teams, including customer service and even finance, for tasks ranging from user support to earnings call preparation. The company has also unified several teams- spanning research, infrastructure, and security to accelerate AI deployment across products.

AI Tools Replacing Legacy Systems

Pichai confirmed that Google’s Gemini models are now integrated into all 15 of its products with over half a billion users. This includes Android and Pixel devices. Gemini is also set to replace Google Assistant across mobile devices, with rollouts planned for tablets, cars, headphones, and smartwatches later in 2025.

In terms of user engagement, Pichai said the AI-powered search experience, “AI Overviews,” now serves over 1.5 billion monthly users. The company is also testing “AI Mode,” which combines multimodal inputs and deeper reasoning, to compete with platforms like Perplexity and ChatGPT.
