Mitsubishi Electric India & Earthwatch Institute Join Hands to Launch CSR Initiative for Environment Conservation

Gurugram: Mitsubishi Electric India has initiated a new Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project in partnership with Earthwatch Institute India, focusing on the conservation of water bodies and surrounding biodiversity. The project is being implemented in Talegaon Dabhade and Pimpri Chinchwad near Pune, Maharashtra, and in Pulicat near Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

This long-term initiative aims to restore and protect critical freshwater ecosystems while fostering environmental awareness and community-led conservation. The project is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals—SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and SDG 13 (Climate Action)—demonstrating the company’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship.

  • Community-Led Conservation and Education

One of the core components of the project is community involvement. As part of the initiative, 25 self-help groups, including local women and fisherfolk, are being trained to become Lake Stewards. These groups will take the lead in implementing on-ground conservation strategies and maintaining the ecological health of local water bodies.

The programme also includes tree plantations around the lakes to help reduce soil erosion, stabilize lakebanks, and improve air quality. In addition, the project aims to build a suitable ecosystem for native species, thus enhancing biodiversity and restoring ecological balance.

Educational outreach is another key component. The initiative features citizen science programmes, school workshops, and experiential learning modules to educate children and adults on water quality, health, hygiene, and the broader impacts of climate change.

  • Digital Tools and Biodiversity Awareness

To help people connect with their environment, the project will also provide digital field guides that showcase the biodiversity of lakes and wetlands. These tools aim to cultivate a deeper appreciation and understanding of local ecosystems among the general public.
