Reliance Retail Acquires Kelvinator to Expand Presence in Consumer Durables Market

Mumbai: Reliance Retail has acquired home appliances brand Kelvinator, marking a strategic step to strengthen its position in India’s consumer durables segment.

With this acquisition, Reliance Retail aims to enhance its offerings in the premium home appliances market. Kelvinator, known for pioneering electric refrigeration and once a household name in India during the 1970s and 1980s, will now operate under the Reliance Retail umbrella. The move is expected to add both brand value and legacy to Reliance’s consumer durables portfolio, especially in refrigeration, air conditioning, and other white goods categories.

The company stated that the integration of Kelvinator’s product expertise with Reliance’s extensive retail and distribution network will help make a wider range of appliances accessible across urban and rural India.

The acquisition aligns with Reliance Retail’s broader strategy to increase its footprint in the non-food retail sector, particularly in electronics and home appliances. The company already operates in this space through its chain of Reliance Digital stores. By adding Kelvinator to its portfolio, it aims to offer more in-house and proprietary product lines, which may help improve margins and brand control.

Industry experts note that the acquisition could also be a response to growing competition in the consumer durables segment, with both Indian and international players expanding their footprint in India. The move comes at a time when rising disposable incomes and increased demand for energy-efficient appliances are driving sectoral growth.
