Amazon Commits $12.7 Billion to Strengthen AI and Cloud Infrastructure in India

Amazon Pushes 10-minute Delivery Model to Mumbai Amid Rising Quick Commerce Race

New Delhi: Amazon Web Services (AWS) has committed $12.7 billion to expand its cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in India, marking a significant step in the company’s global strategy to scale AI capabilities. The investment will focus on building high-performance computing infrastructure, advanced data centres, and platforms to support the development of large-scale AI and machine learning models.

According to AWS, the initiative aims to provide enterprises, startups, and developers in India with the infrastructure required to build and deploy generative AI applications. This includes expanding cloud capacity to support computationally intensive workloads and strengthening India’s role as a regional AI development hub.

The move comes amid growing global competition among technology firms to secure dominance in AI infrastructure. AWS’s expansion positions India as a strategic geography in this landscape, given its skilled tech workforce, rapidly digitising economy, and government policies that support cloud adoption and innovation.

The investment aligns with broader trends in the sector, as global firms race to develop artificial general intelligence (AGI) and address increasing enterprise demand for scalable AI solutions. Other major players, including Microsoft, Google, and Meta, have also ramped up their AI infrastructure efforts in key international markets.

AWS has not provided a detailed timeline for the infrastructure rollout, but the company emphasised that the investment will support long-term AI adoption across key sectors, including healthcare, finance, education, and retail. Industry experts see this as part of a wider push to future-proof cloud ecosystems against the rising demands of AI technologies.
