GlobalLogic, Ericsson Deploy Private 5G at Hitachi Rail’s US factory to Boost Automation

New Delhi: GlobalLogic and Ericsson have deployed a private 5G network at Hitachi Rail’s digital factory in Hagerstown, Maryland, marking a step toward next-generation manufacturing in the rail sector. The facility, spanning 307,000 square feet and capable of producing up to 20 railcars each month, will use the network as the foundation for advanced automation, real-time data analysis, and digital engineering applications. With ultra-low latency and secure connectivity, the deployment is designed to enable use cases such as predictive maintenance, automated quality inspections, digital twins for railcar simulation, and IoT-driven material transport.

GlobalLogic, a Hitachi Group company, managed the technical and business consulting, integration, and lifecycle management of the private 5G network, working closely with Ericsson as a long-term partner. The initiative is intended to demonstrate how industrial facilities can adopt secure wireless connectivity to improve efficiency, safety, and sustainability. According to Hitachi Rail, the Hagerstown site will serve as a blueprint for digital-first rail manufacturing, integrating AI, robotics, and connected systems to streamline production and reduce errors. Ericsson emphasized that the project highlights the role of private 5G in powering Industry 4.0, particularly in areas such as collaborative robotics, data-driven decision-making, and energy optimization.

The deployment reflects a broader trend of industrial manufacturers experimenting with private 5G to enhance automation and reduce operational risks. By positioning the Hagerstown facility as a testbed for these capabilities, Hitachi Rail, GlobalLogic, and Ericsson are showcasing how telecommunications and manufacturing expertise can converge to shape the future of smart factories in North America.
