New Delhi, Apr 22, (CXO Media): Tesla has added a six-seater version of its Model Y to its India lineup, widening its offerings in the premium electric SUV segment.
Model Y L Launch And Pricing
The company introduced the extended-wheelbase Model Y L at an ex-showroom price of Rs 61.99 lakh. The new variant sits between the rear-wheel-drive and long-range configurations already available in India, signalling Tesla’s attempt to broaden its limited product range in the country.
In Delhi, the rear-wheel-drive Model Y Premium starts at Rs 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom), while the Model Y Premium Long Range is priced at Rs 67.89 lakh. The newly launched Model Y L Premium, which features all-wheel drive and an additional seating row, is expected to appeal to buyers looking for larger family-oriented electric SUVs.
Performance And Specifications
All Model Y variants sold in India offer a top speed of 201 km/h. Depending on the configuration, the driving range is rated between 500 km and 681 km (WLTP), with acceleration from 0–100 km/h taking between 5.0 and 5.9 seconds.
Pricing Challenges And Market Context
Tesla entered the Indian market in July last year with imported Model Y units. High pricing remains a constraint, largely due to import duties that can reach 100% on fully built vehicles. As a result, Tesla vehicles remain positioned in the premium segment, well above the price band of most passenger vehicles sold in India.
Global Rollout And India Strategy
The extended-wheelbase Model Y was first introduced in China, where the starting price is 339,000 yuan. The variant has not yet been launched in the United States. Its introduction in India reflects Tesla’s continued testing of market demand for higher-capacity electric SUVs while operating without local manufacturing.
