IBM to Cut 9,000 Jobs in US, Shifts Focus to India

IBM Expands AI Capabilities with Agentic Innovation Hub in Bengaluru

New Delhi: IBM is set to lay off around 9,000 employees in the United States as part of its ongoing global restructuring. The job cuts will primarily affect the Cloud Classic unit, which was formed after IBM acquired SoftLayer’s infrastructure. Reports indicate that nearly 25% of this unit’s workforce may be impacted.

India Gains as IBM Expands Operations

While the layoffs are concentrated in the US, India is expected to see an increase in hiring. According to industry sources, IBM has been steadily transferring roles to India over the past few years, and this trend is likely to continue. The company has more job openings in India than in the US, signaling a shift in workforce strategy.

IBM CEO Arvind Krishna has previously emphasized India’s role in the company’s future operations, citing lower costs and a strong talent pool. The company has a significant presence in Indian cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, and Chennai, where it is expected to expand further.

Demand for Tech Professionals in India to Rise

With IBM reducing jobs in the US, demand for skilled professionals in India is expected to increase, particularly in areas such as cloud computing, cybersecurity, hybrid cloud, and AI. This shift aligns with a broader industry trend where companies are leveraging India’s workforce for core operations, development, and support services.

IBM’s latest job cuts highlight its focus on optimizing costs and restructuring its global workforce, with India playing a central role in its future operations.
