Wipro Employees Face Pay Freeze as CHRO Presses Pause on Hikes; Despite High profits

Wipro has postponed its decision on salary increments for the current fiscal year (FY26), citing a challenging macroeconomic environment and evolving demand-supply dynamics.

New Delhi: Wipro, a major provider of IT services, has postponed deciding on pay increases for the current fiscal year. According to Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) Saurabh Govil, the company has not yet decided on its stance in light of the difficult socioeconomic climate.

Speaking at Wipro’s Q1 FY26 earnings conference, Govil said, “We haven’t decided on the hikes yet. It is too early. The macro environment, the current demand, supply situation – all of these will play in role. Closer to the date, we will take a call and communicate.”

As Govil had mentioned in Wipro’s Q4 FY25 earnings commentary in April, the company had awarded wage raises ahead of schedule in September 2023 after a previous round in December 2022.

Similar remarks were made last week by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), which announced that it would postpone its yearly pay raises, which are normally implemented on 1 April, by at least a quarter in order to gain a better understanding of customer demand and business sentiment.

Wipro’s cautious approach to pay comes in spite of the company’s strong Q1 FY26 results, which included an 11% increase in consolidated net profit year over year.

The restrained recruiting and cautious remarks regarding raises suggest a strategic realignment of Wipro’s workforce and cost structures to conform to changing business circumstances, even if the company has not declared a formal hiring freeze.

The ongoing wage uncertainty is likely to have implications for employee morale and retention, particularly as the broader IT industry recalibrates talent and compensation strategies amid shifting demand.

The CHRO at Wipro stated unequivocally that the decision about pay increases will be reexamined nearer the relevant cycle, with internal assessments, demand signals, and macroeconomic considerations probably influencing the ultimate result.
