Google Develops Open Payments Protocol for AI-driven Commerce

New Delhi: Google has introduced the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), an open standard aimed at enabling AI agents to complete financial transactions on behalf of users and merchants. The move comes as the role of AI in consumer decision-making grows, raising questions around authorization, security, and accountability in digital payments.

The protocol is designed to address a key shift in commerce: transactions may no longer always involve a human directly clicking “buy.” Instead, AI agents could execute purchases in real time while a user is present or autonomously handle delegated tasks when the user is not actively involved. To support this, AP2 uses “mandates” – tamper-proof, cryptographically signed digital contracts that act as verifiable proof of a user’s instructions.

Google has brought together over 60 partners for the initiative, including Adyen, Mastercard, PayPal, and Coinbase. By creating a shared protocol, AP2 seeks to prevent fragmentation in how AI-driven transactions are processed across the payment’s ecosystem. The framework supports multiple payment methods, ranging from traditional card transactions to stablecoins and real-time bank transfers.

The effort also extends into crypto payments. Google has collaborated with Coinbase, the Ethereum Foundation, and MetaMask on an A2A x402 extension, a production-ready mechanism for agent-based crypto transactions. This reflects the growing role of blockchain-based settlement in digital commerce, where AI systems may act as intermediaries between users and decentralized platforms.

Analysts say the protocol could set the groundwork for regulatory and industry alignment on AI commerce. By offering a way to authenticate user intent and establish accountability in cases of fraud or error, AP2 positions itself as a framework for future discussions on governance in autonomous payments.
