JSW Energy to Acquire GE’s Durgapur Thermal Boiler Plant

JSW Energy will acquire GE’s supercritical boiler plant in Durgapur, expand capacity and jobs, and invest Rs 24,000 crore to boost its power portfolio.

Kolkata: JSW Energy is set to acquire GE’s supercritical thermal boiler manufacturing facility in Durgapur.

The Durgapur plant has a capacity to manufacture one to two boilers per year or 1600 (800MWx2).

However, the plant is currently running at 15 per cent capacity. It only makes spare parts for boilers for existing clients.

This one is the only such facility in the eastern region of India. It is the third such facility in India, other than the ones from BHEL and Mitsubishi.

GE is exiting the thermal boilers business globally. Selling the Durgapur unit is part of this global strategy.

JSW will increase the workforce at the plant from 200 now to 600, post acquisition. It also plans to invest in another 1600 MW supercritical power plant in Salboni. This would take JSW’s total capacity to 3200 MW.

With an incremental investment of Rs 24,000 crore, JSW Group’s total power investment will go up to Rs 40,000 crore.
