Google Bets Big On AI With Googlebook, But Is This The Beginning Of The End For Chromebooks?

New Delhi, May 13(CXO Media): Google has introduced Googlebook, a new range of Gemini-powered laptops, but the bigger question is whether the company is quietly preparing to move beyond Chromebooks.

Announced on Tuesday, Googlebook will launch this fall with support from major PC brands including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo. Unlike traditional laptops, Google says these devices are built around Gemini, its flagship AI system, with features designed to make everyday tasks faster and more personalised.

Among the key additions is “Magic Pointer,” an AI-powered cursor that can recognise what is on the screen and suggest actions instantly. A meeting date in an email could turn into a calendar invite with a click, while users can also combine images or access Android apps directly from their phones without switching devices.

Why This Launch Matters

Googlebook may be a laptop launch on the surface, but it also signals a larger shift inside Google. The company introduced Chromebooks nearly 15 years ago, turning low-cost laptops into a popular option for schools and workplaces. Now, Googlebook appears to mark a transition toward AI-first computing powered by Gemini and an Android-based system.

Google has said existing Chromebooks will continue receiving support, though some devices may eventually move to the new experience. The move also places Google more directly against Microsoft’s AI-focused Copilot+ PCs as big tech companies race to make AI central to personal computing.
