After 6,000 Global Cuts, Microsoft Slashes Hundreds More Roles

Microsoft has initiated a new wave of layoffs, impacting hundreds of positions, including 305 at its Redmond headquarters, bringing the total in Washington state to approximately 2,300.

New Delhi: Just a few weeks after laying off about 6,000 workers worldwide, Microsoft has started a new wave of layoffs, eliminating hundreds of positions. 305 workers at the company’s headquarters in Redmond are impacted by this new round of layoffs, which were verified in a file with the Employment Security Department of Washington state.

It takes the overall number of layoffs in the home state of Microsoft to about 2,300 in the last few weeks.

The action is a reflection of the software behemoth’s ongoing attempts to optimise operations in the face of a rapidly changing technological and commercial landscape.

A Microsoft representative verified that this most recent wave of layoffs is separate from the larger staff reduction that impacted some 6,000 employees worldwide, according to a Geekwire story. The business emphasised that the fresh layoffs represent “significantly less than 1%” of its whole workforce worldwide, despite the timing being close.

The reductions seem to be part of a larger plan to reduce overlapping functions and flatten management levels to increase operational efficiency. Microsoft has a history of using this structural strategy.

In the past, the organisation has modified its personnel and internal structure to adapt to changes in the market, advances in technology, and changing corporate objectives.

The current layoffs are part of a larger trend in the global tech industry, as big companies like Google, Amazon and Meta have implemented widespread job cuts since 2023.

The necessity to adjust to new technological paradigms, especially in AI and cloud computing, shifting consumer needs, and overhiring during the epidemic are also factors in many of these shifts.
