Ericsson Report Highlights 5G FWA as Key Monetisation Avenue for Telecom Sector

Ericsson's June 2025 Mobility Report highlights the growing monetisation potential of 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), with speed-based plans gaining traction globally. India leads in data consumption and rapid 5G adoption.

New Delhi: The latest edition of the Ericsson Mobility Report underscores a rising global interest in monetising 5G through Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), with service providers increasingly turning to speed-based tariff plans enabled by 5G networks.

According to the report, 5G subscriptions are expected to exceed 2.9 billion globally by the end of 2025, with 5G networks projected to handle 80 per cent of all mobile traffic by 2030.

FWA, in particular, is gaining traction as a competitive broadband solution, forecast to make up more than 35 per cent of new fixed broadband connections and reach 350 million connections by 2030.

The report notes a marked rise in the number of communication service providers (CSPs) offering speed-tiered FWA plans, now at 51 per cent globally, up from 40 per cent a year ago, driven by adoption in North America and expanding uptake in Europe and the Middle East.

India emerged as a standout market, boasting the highest data traffic per smartphone user at 32 GB per month. The country had 290 million 5G users by end-2024 and is expected to reach 980 million by 2030.

With 95 per cent mid-band coverage already achieved, India’s 5G rollout is accelerating, particularly through large-scale FWA deployments aimed at bridging the rural-urban digital divide.

The report emphasises that CSPs are increasingly exploring beyond traditional data plans, leveraging 5G standalone and advanced capabilities to offer differentiated services across entertainment, gaming, enterprise networks, and events, ushering in new revenue models aligned with value creation.
